Qwoted: What do you see as the future of PR—technologically, strategically, or in any category you’re passionate about?
Kerry Haggerty: I think the future of PR will lean into simplicity. We’ve seen this trend happen after Covid and it’s still going strong, from media send outs to straight forward and to the point pitching. I think that out of the box strategic work and even stunt worthy PR will always continue to have a place.
Qwoted: What do you do that you’re most proud of and that other PRs could learn from?
Haggerty: I keep it real. I like to be exactly who I am when working with the media. I am transparent and honest and try to provide them with everything they need in the outreach that I do. Transparency and honesty goes a long way in building relationships with the media that feel genuine and not just robotic for work purposes. I think people appreciate that and I always appreciate it in return.
Qwoted: What’s your toughest challenge with reporters?
Haggerty: Deadlines will always be the toughest challenges and I think it is for the reporters, too of course! I often work with experts including doctors who are seeing patients all day, so it can sometimes be difficult to nail them down if there is a really tight deadline.
Qwoted: How do you approach breaking through the noise floor to get effective coverage?
Haggerty: I think that a couple of things that I said above help to break through for effective coverage. I think approaching media outreach in a way that’s genuine and very straight forward with exactly what they need always helps. I often like to tease a few different story angles in the outreach that I do to help the editor to brainstorm and of course I make sure that my outreach is tailored toward who I am pitching. I may even mention a specific article of theirs that I saw, that resonated and encouraged me to reach out.
Qwoted: How does PR in 2024 square with the future of journalism?
Haggerty: I think that successful PR professionals have always made an effort to connect with journalists on a deeper level and really establish those relationships and journalists are doing the same with their readers. Especially with social media, it’s become even easier to do so.
Qwoted: What advice would you give to those seeking to find an effective PR person?
Haggerty: To anyone looking for a PR person, I would say to inquire about their experience and their take on PR and the process. You can’t promise things in PR, but you can find someone who can effectively tell your story and get it in front of the right people. Someone you feel connected with, enjoy and can trust.
Qwoted: What is your golden rule of PR?
Haggerty: Transparency is key!
Qwoted: What do enjoy most about working PR?
Haggerty: I love being able to tell the story for brands and experts that are doing amazing things.
